Mid-Back Pain & Thoracic Spine Rehabilitation
Expert, one-on-one physical therapy for thoracic spine and mid-back conditions — from postural pain and rib dysfunction to thoracic disc injuries. Led by Daniel Crowe, PT, DPT, OCS, a board-certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist with 13 years of experience.
Postural Mid-Back Pain
Postural retraining and targeted strengthening to relieve pain from prolonged sitting or desk work.
Rib Dysfunction
Manual therapy addressing rib joint restrictions that cause sharp pain with breathing or rotation.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Postural correction, nerve mobility work, and strengthening to relieve compression-related arm symptoms.
Scapular Pain & Dysfunction
Scapular stabilization training addressing pain referred from poor shoulder blade mechanics.
Thoracic Disc Injury
Targeted exercise and manual therapy to manage symptoms and restore safe, pain-free movement.
Costovertebral Joint Pain
Hands-on mobilization and exercise to restore mobility where the ribs meet the thoracic spine.
Scoliosis-Related Pain
Individualized exercise programs addressing asymmetry-related pain and supporting functional movement.
Mid-Back Pain and Thoracic Pain Treatment can include
Manual therapy
Hands-on thoracic and rib joint mobilization, along with soft tissue techniques, restore mobility and reduce pain — especially effective for the stiffness and restriction common to thoracic spine conditions.
Therapeutic exercise & postural retraining
Thoracic extension and rotation mobility work, paired with scapular and postural muscle strengthening, address the root cause of most mid-back pain: prolonged positions and movement loss, not structural damage.
Breathing mechanics & rib mobility
For rib- and breathing-related symptoms, targeted techniques restore normal rib cage expansion and costovertebral joint movement, often providing significant relief for sharp or catching pain with breathing or rotation.
Thoracic Spine Stiffness
Mobility-focused manual therapy and exercise to restore rotation and extension lost to prolonged sitting.

Nebraska allows direct access to physical therapy, meaning you can schedule an appointment without a physician referral. However, some insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement purposes — we recommend checking with your insurer prior to your first visit.
-
Postural and movement-related thoracic pain often improves within 4–6 weeks of consistent mobility and strengthening work. Rib dysfunction frequently responds even faster to manual therapy, sometimes within a few sessions. More chronic presentations, especially those tied to long-standing postural habits, may take 8–12 weeks to fully resolve.
-
An Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) is a physical therapist who has passed a rigorous specialty examination administered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. OCS-certified therapists demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge, skills, and experience in orthopedic diagnosis and treatment — the highest credential available in musculoskeletal physical therapy.
-
Prolonged sitting, especially in a rounded posture, places sustained load on thoracic spine structures and weakens the postural muscles that support the upper back over time. This is one of the most common causes of thoracic pain we see, and it typically responds very well to targeted mobility and strengthening exercises combined with practical workstation adjustments.
-
Your first appointment is a full orthopedic evaluation with Dr. Crowe. We review your medical history, conduct a comprehensive examination of your thoracic spine, posture, and breathing mechanics, identify the root cause of your condition, and build an individualized treatment plan with you before you leave. You will not be passed off to a technician or aide at any point.
-
At Power of Motion, every session is one-on-one with your OCS-certified therapist — no aides, no shared appointments, no 15-minute check-ins while your therapist manages three other patients. You receive your therapist's full attention, expertise, and hands-on care for the entire session, every time. This model consistently produces better outcomes and a faster, safer recovery.
